Lent 2011 Music Playlist: Some Originals

I have written quite a bit of music over the years and rarely get to share any of it. Here are a selection of VERY rough live recordings and garageband demos. I selected these particular songs to share because of their thematic relationship to Lent. These are sketches of life during Lenten seasons and, as such, are works in progress. The only piece I did not compose is the first one. Psalm 9 is an instrumental written by my wife, Sarah, that seemed to me an appropriate way to begin these snapshots, “For God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish.” Hope you enjoy these as you journey with Christ towards Easter this Lenten season. Vicit Agnus Noster.

Gloria (Lent 2011)

Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son,
Praise be to the Holy Spirit, binding all the Church as One,
As it was in the beginning, it will be until the end.

Hope Resurrection

In the hell of mortal midnight’s burn
There’s a price to pay, there’s a lesson learned
And of all of the things I wish didn’t say
Where it always seems to end up anyway

There’s a story I just can’t connect
Running up and down my history’s neck
Latch the heart to the mind and the mind to the brain
And pray that my children don’t end up the same

Hope resurrection’s up on ahead where the mind and the heart are eternally fed
One day I’ll look back on the tracks I have bled
And look on the pathways of God

Well of the world and the shove are despair in my soul
I leap for redemption, do I leap this alone
If I could just see, it all would be clear
But the faith that I’ve found is the faith that I fear

It’s not what I’m getting; it’s not why I’m here
Cause the terminal life is most certainly clear
Least to me, it’s the hell that I most often see
At the foot of that holy mysterious tree

Hope resurrection’s up on ahead where the mind and the heart are eternally fed
One day I’ll look back on the tracks I have bled
And look on the pathways of God

Jesus come and walk with me
Calls like a final most desperate plea
Humbly beseech Father above
Spare the sword from my house the people I love

Sacred head now wounded be
Sign for the kingdom I seldom can see
The subtle curse of being alone
Is the death of the soul in this world you own

There is this grief that I carry around
It’s the absence of God in the looming foreground
And yes I believe in His intimate breeze
But His otherness here makes it harder to be

Guilty Man

Somebody please intercede for me
Cause the only life I’m living is my own
And the cross of resurrection bears
The force of hell in me
I know, I’ve been told, I’m a guilty man

Right here I stay
Though you slay these dreams
All is light for those who parry in the dark
Be the wounds that heal our wounding
Press to ours thy bloody scars
I know, I’ve been told, I’m a guilty man

Veiled in Satan’s hand of retribution
Are Veins that look and awful lot like mine
Blood flows from the face of restitution
I’m counting on that face to make it mine…..
I know, I’ve been told, I’m a guilty man

God I feel alone in temptations wind
I’m a brand plucked from the fire and set to stand
With the vestments of an angel
And a branch from God’s own hand
Branch that be, Cover me, I’m a guilty man

Veiled in Satan’s hand of retribution
Are Veins that look and awful lot like mine
Blood flows from the face of restitution
I’m counting on that face to make it mine…..

Release that hand, whisper now to me
For the fire and the earthquake do no bear
The presence of an angel or a death by holy stare
Where are you, I am here, as a guilty man

Time Will Tell

Only time will tell if I was right
I know time will tell that I was wrong
Least bout most things under this here sun
My feeling now is life has just begun

I been walking round this lonely bend
Praying to my God that he would send
Faster wheels so I could navigate
With leather seats and a big fat valve stem eight

Have daylight mercy on my midnight soul
For thinking I would find a pot of gold
Or at least just something to contend
With a holy life and a coat that’s yours to lend

Absolution is a welcome friend
And joy elusive keeps us from pretend
So I wait in this here cloud of dust
Knowing it will clear in time for dusk

Psalm 10

Why do you stand so far removed?
Why do you look on wicked men?
And now refuse to lift your hand
While the chosen wait in a burning land

The nations rage, the cynics groan
The wealthy man is always home
We will our false accusers face
And chose to die in our enemy’s place

Come O Lord
Lift up your hand and save
Crush by your sword these wicked days

Why do these wicked run to scheme
If God is dead
Let the rich man sing
As if prosperity was pride
Release your nets push us to your side

The nations rage, the cynics groan
The wealthy man is always home
We will our false accusers face
And chose to die in our enemy’s place

Lord Have Mercy (Kyrie)

Ever begotten and only Son,
Light in our darkness in prayer we come.
Teach us dear Shepherd our lives to dwell,
Deep in Your shadows we pass through hell.

Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy.
Only say the word, and we shall be healed.

Blessed and hidden in love’s delight,
Your Holy Spirit will voice our cry.
Life in the Father exalted the Son,
Sending Your Spirit, Your kingdom begun.

Save the Best

Should have known that you were sayin’
You would save the best for last
Given all the talk of Kingdom
Still feels senseless when we act
It’s a tension, It’s a space
To flush out breath

Turned away into confusion
To venture talk of holy fire
Poking faces into mountains
To wish God would chose somebody else
And the hope I find as frightening
As any hell

Nights are different kinds of lonely
Days expectation of the time
Dim light fading down to simmer
Like the funeral’s final day
Luminous, Luminous
Hits all at once…

I’m here to stay
Here to stay
Here to stay

Evening Prayer

Before the ending of the day
Creator of the world we pray
That with thy wonted favor thou
Wouldst be our guard and keeper now

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, Thine only Son
Who with the Holy Ghost and Thee
Doth live and reign eternally

From all ill dreams defend our eyes
From nightly fears and fantasies
Tread under foot our ghostly foe
That no pollution we may know

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, Thine only Son
Who with the Holy Ghost and Thee
Doth live and reign eternally

Compline (Don’t Let Go)

Now I lay me down to sleep
Pray the Lord my soul to keep
The blessing of peace
Remember your peace
Oh don’t let go
Oh don’t let go

Lord you set your servant free
Promise soon to be released
The Savior I see
The Savior I see
Oh don’t let go
Oh don’t let go

Guide us waking, Lord we pray
Guide us sleeping, watch for day
Oh don’t let go
Oh don’t let go

Remember your peace
The blessing of peace
Oh don’t let go
Oh don’t let go
Oh don’t let go
